Love in the Age of Worry

November 1, 2017 by Sarah Parshall Perry

Love in the Age of Worry “He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.” – Psalm 91:4 NLT I’d planned to write about Jesse this week. I'd planned a piece about theoretical fear. Jesse is my youngest child, and has autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ADHD. As He is wont to do, God changed the plan. On a Tuesday … [Read more...]

How to Have Peaceful & Meaningful Conversation About Disability

October 27, 2017 by Sarah

I recently watched the new Netflix series, "Atypical." I won't go into a review of the show (though, in short, I found it relatable in many ways, despite disliking some plot lines), but I will mention one particular non-spoiler scene where the husband attends the autism support group with his wife (which he never has been to since the first time he tried and then quit.) The wife shared a story of … [Read more...]

3 Reasons To Dream

September 18, 2017 by autismblessings

Isaiah 26:3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you. The doctor said, "Your son has autism" as he wrote prescriptions for an MRI and EEG to rule out any brain tumors. I remember staring at my son and thinking what does this mean. My husband quickly asked the doctor, "Will he go to school? Will he be able to go to college?" I was numb. My … [Read more...]

4 Things I Learned Being an Autism Mom

August 14, 2017 by autismblessings

The doctor just blurted it out, "Your child has autism, now just get an MRI and EEG to rule out any brain damage." Seriously that is how we got the actual diagnosis of autism for my son Charlie in 2004. I was numb.   I was overwhelmed.   I was sad.   I didn't know what to do. I have been an autism mom a little over 13 years now.  I found out on June 25, 2004.  I will never forget that day. … [Read more...]

Evolution and Hard Decisions

December 7, 2016 by Sarah Parshall Perry

Parenting means change. Parenting special needs children like Jesse means the change can be uncomfortable.

Parenting is synonymous with change. Our children grow and learn; they achieve and alter. And when they are special needs children, their bodies and abilities are in constant evolution. Change is rarely comfortable. Jesse’s original diagnoses include PDD-NOS, ODD, OCD, and ADHD. Some of those acronyms will change as he grows. Some – if God sees fit – might disappear. New ones could be added. … [Read more...]
