Balance in life is difficult for me. I have struggled with this most of my life. I am a helper. I am a peacemaker. I put others before my own needs at times.
When I do something I give it my all, almost too much. I am passionate. I have a narrow focus on that work, missing other things around me.
Some of the things I struggle and have struggled with in balancing different things:
Doing disability awareness activities with others
Owning my own PT/OT/ST company
Helping other families with their IEP meetings
Working with other families with their children who have challenging behaviors
Being the Director of a Special Needs School
Wife
Mother
Sister
Daughter
Friend
Homeowner
Having a child with unique needs and challenges
Consistent devotions
Exercise
Eating Healthy
What are the things you struggle balancing?
Just this evening I was helping my son with his homework (which is most of the time a challenge for him). This is a hard balance. Do we work the first part of the weekend or wait until the last part? Do we do it right when we get home from school or wait until later in the evening? I have other things I need to take care of too and need to figure out what is best for all of the different tasks I have and Charlie is one of those important things. We as parents all need breaks as well as balance helping our kids with special needs.
Recently God has spoken to me clearly about balance. I encourage others all the time “you have to take care of yourself before you can help others”, but yet I don’t do this myself. I am starting to make changes after 45 years on this earth. It is amazing how when you do take care of yourself (eating healthier, exercising, balancing all the areas I am helping others) how much better you feel. The better you feel the more you are able to help others and feel balanced.
The best way though to stay in balance is to read God’s word daily. In the last year I have read daily Jesus Calling by Sarah Young. It has really spoken to me and she references verses that further your understanding of God and His love for you. I have also read one book of the Bible, one at a time so I can focus on just that one book, digging deep into what it is saying. The comforting thing is God has balance mastered!
Sometimes you have to say no. Sometimes you have to make boundaries. Sometimes you have to rest and ask for help.
How will you better balance all the things you need to do daily? Try and do your best to balance it all with the help of Christ as your ultimate guide.
