Have you ever walked along the shoreline as a storm approached, staggering through churning waters trying to get a foothold as the sand shifted with each step?
When you are the parent of a child with a special needs, life can feel like walking alongside a stormy sea. You are always adapting, always reacting and ever alert to make sure your child is safe. Most mornings, you never quite know what will come your way as the day rolls by.
Our lives are anything but stable as situations arise each day and the unexpected comes. With the many changes that life brings—a special needs parent can feel tossed about.
As I look back on the entirety of my own life, I can see a lifetime of changes, some good… but others have been downright stressful. And yet looking back, I see one constant thread that has always been there: God’s holy presence through it all.
As the years pass and more of my years can be viewed from life’s rearview mirror, I am blessed with an opportunity to see the hard evidence of His faithful presence in every change and every storm. I know this to be true: God was always there. He never let go of me.
Thinking of this, I am suddenly aware that I can have—and have always had— stability in a storm. I can stand firm … even as the waves of unexpected change rise around me.
How comforting it is to know we can have stability in God even when life as a special needs parent is often like a walk in a stormy sea. We can (yes, we really can!) walk assuredly in life, come what may!
Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.
– Psalm 62:1-2
